  1. Rosa died....... Rectifier goosed!!!!
    Post Number 1 by Vegasoul » Sun Jul 08, 2012 6:09 pm

travelling home from Hawes today, pootling through clothe the rev counter suddenly redlined and returned to normal. Noticed that time had reset..... Thought I'd keep my eye on it. Fuelled and went to restart and nothing... the Dash lit up but fuel pump continued whirring. Then started...... Got to j27 m6 then clocks went off bike stuttered then nothing.... Fought my way to hard shoulder from lane 3. Rosa completely dead. forgot to add I had a very warm arse so am guessing my battery was cooking nicely!!!!

Bike has now been recovered to youles manchester... Told them was prob rectifier but bike still under warranty (registered jan 2011). Was told that for parts like rectifier warranty is only a yr but would prob get it done as good will gesture from triumph. They said prob wrecked battery too so will try get that done for free for me.

Was just wondering, is that really case that the rectifier will only have 1 yrs warranty? Also, that if it fries the battery the battery would not be covered? The bike has only done 2400 miles.... Hopefully this will all get done for free and Rosa will be back on road later in week. Til then I've just had to tax daisy (d955i) but realised her MOT is due on 10th...... Bummer!!!!!

  2. Almost home after a good ride in North Wales I thought the bike was running a bit hot and as I left A55 onto A51 the low fuel light came on. I had done 120 miles since fill up, I usually get 150 and so I thought there was something amiss. Soon after the bike just stopped. I checked the tank and there was plenty of fuel left. I tried starting it but although all the dash lights lit there was no response. I checked the fuses, all OK so I called Carole Nash to get me home.Checked the battery at home - flat as a bag. When not in use I keep it connected to Optimate.
After reading the forum I am sure it is the R/R. I was shocked to be told the replacement was £195 + bloody VAT. Has anyone fitted an Electrex unit - £107 + P&P I intend to fit a new battery as mine is nearly five years old. The bike has only done 10300 miles.

Have a go at Triumph for a goodwill replacement. Other people have been given free parts and labour and they may do that for you. If they won't ask for a discount on the genuine part and appropriate loom adapter.

  4. Hi Folks'
Good news, after the reg/rec failed on the 675. Following advice from several people, I contacted Triumph direct.
The result was that they replaced the faulty unit AND the battery FOC. Just picked the bike up from Bill Smiths, all OK. It is sad that this problem has been there from the bikes intro'. but I do appreciate Triumph's response.

There is now a replacement programme-up to chassis number 456776-so no more need for inventive replacements or goodwill!

  6. 2006 675 Daytona 8,600 miles

6 miles into my third ride of the new year, the fuel light came on (still half a tank full when I set off). A mile further down the road and the engine cut out and could not restart. I got my recovery company to pick me up and take me home.

The day after, I rang Youles in Manchester and said I suspected a faulty reg/reg. After checking my VIN number they confirmed that I could have it replaced free of charge under warranty. Absolutely no problem.

My only minor grumble was getting it there. They wanted £80 to come pick it up. In the end I had to hire a van for the day.

Otherwise I'm quite happy with the experience.

    2008 triumph daytona 675 11355 miles

Fuel light started coming on when tank was full. Bike would shut off and display would start acting crazy.

Replaced R/R under recall. Now runs great.

  8. 2006 Daytona, 20,000 miles. Round Donington on a trackday, coming out of coppice, giving it death, 10,000 rpm in 3rd, stutters, clocks go nuts, drops to 2, I whipped the clutch in and it conked out completely. Got back to the pits (managed to simply freewheel all the way as I was doing about 80 when it started!) and the bike wouldn't start at all, just a click.
The bike has a rich and varied history, it went through 2 triumph units under warranty, then had an R1 unit on there, but was unreliable because of bad connectors, so i soldered a honda one I had in my garage on there. These older honda units aren't known to be especially reliable, so I should've guessed what was in store next, but I've had 12 months use out of it. Hopefully the battery isn't goosed...

In other news i went sub 2:00 minutes round Donington, and the failure was at the end of the 2nd to last session of the day, so it wasn't all doom and gloom.

I'm going to solder in one of these little chaps next: http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/acatalog/RR55.html

  9. Yeah, great news: It not starting wasn't down to lack of power, it was just that the engine was jammed with the mashed up valve that had come off the end of its stem. Another rebuild. Anybody want to buy a daytona?

  10. Apologies for reopening this old thread, but my R/R has given up I think as I had these symptoms:
    • Stall at a stop after riding for 5+ minutes
    • Few days later, stall just after starting
    • Then same day after riding for an hour
      • noticed fuel light come on
      • dash board lcd died and revs went to 0
      • pulled over stopped
      • engine stall and starter motor would never fire again
      • breakdown guy said there's not enough power to keep bike running
Bike is 2012 675, last of the underseat exhaust model. 21,200 miles. Recently had starter motor replaced which was almost totally worn out.

Is there a recommended replacement for the stock R/R?

The 2012 bike should have the uprated R&R already fitted from new.
Imho 20k is far too low a mileage for the starter to have failed too. Plenty of much higher mileage engines still have perfectly working starters.

Fwiw the fact that both have caused issues would have me looking at main cable continuity faults, like a poor main earth cable.

  12. Thanks will ask my mechanic to look into that. I ride all weathers so possibly corroding early? The cooling hoses had perished recently too.

  13. So seems my problem isn’t R/R, it’s the magneto. R/R is fine as expected on my model. Odd though that now the bike won’t fire when turning over on a full battery, so need to resolve that first. Sigh... when’s the new 765 coming out?

Most likely the CPS ( aka Crank Position Sensor: or pulse coil ) This is supplied along with the generator coil, as a set.

    Hello all,

it's been a while, seem the site is busy as ever. I was wondering if someone can help ; confirm Iṽe identified it as a reg;rec problem correctly. Itś a 2012 675R

As I sold my blade (ULEZ / quick easy sale to work colleague) I thought I'd bring my daytona out of storage (plus it's quite a waste only using it a few times a year)

Had it service,MOT'd and suspension refreshed last august then put back in storage.

I've had it ontrickle charge over winter, came to use it this glorious weekend and then planned to ride it bcak down south, but no. It boots up all the whirring noise etc. Then it simply clicks, and doesn˜t start. Is this the REG-REC problem.

It is in the middle of nowhere so this is going to be a right pain to resolve.

Is there anything I can do to confirm, I do have some motorbike repair places a drive away but with trailer it is a pain, Inearly dropped i last time. Also how easy if it is REG;REC to resolve as I also see people say it can be stator. I˜m not mechanically minded and I come up here for family time so don´t want to spend an afternoon pulling my bike apart, then creating more problems than I know how to resolve.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

Hiya Phil, hope you’re doing ok.

The reg rec is more like a cars alternator, so normally you’d run for a bit, but no power would go back to charge your battery, so it’d die.

I’m sure someone far more tech than me will be along soon, and can give you some what to look for’s etc.

Are you with the AA or RAC for a car even? They have a look, or take it to a garage possibly?

Admittedly I’ve hardly used it, but my Honda was left on street for years, apart from a dud battery that had died (my fault) it started every time.

Problem is the bike is stored in middle of nowhere and I cancelled my AA when i got rid of car and Honda Blade.

There is also Automoto Racing which is about the closest garage to me near Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire, but as stated it is a pain in bum to put on my trailer and I nearly dropped it last time trying to do on my own.

The issue is I can take it but I doubt they can get a part within the day (or are they generic) then I’ll have to come back from London to collect it again...as I say somewhat a pain in bum.

So if it’s 100% a part that even I could perhaps have a chance of replacing as it’s straight forward I’d prefer to do that - otherwise this will turn into a mission. And pretty much not riding bike until end of May.

Sounds like a power problem to me.
If it was reg rec as steffy says the battery would be charged and then it would die on route as it wasn't charging.
It sounds like there isn't enough battery to fire it.
Odd as you have had it on trickle but maybe it's a dead battery, battery's do tend to like being charged and discharged (within reason) to keep them fresh.
Check the voltage coming out if the battery, on and off the charger.
