Overtake? How? or not?

Discussion in 'General' started by Stu675, Apr 18, 2012.

  1. Patience is a virtue, just wait for a couple of minutes and pass in a better place ie not on a corner with double white lines.
    god i sound old

  2. But the good roads don't have any straight bits and are therefore white lined everywhere! :p

No you don't, you sound safe.

I would not overtake on double whites, they're there for a reason. If you did overtake and something went wrong, you'd be in the dock for dangerous driving. And what will you do with the 30 seconds you save??? - as above, I'd wait until the double whites had ended.

But I wouldn't be on a Honda

  4. It's obvious when someone has moved over to give you space to overtake. This means they're aware of you. I would overtake if this was the case.

  5. on the flip side of this, I won't let other drivers pressure me into overtaking, no matter how far over they move, I'm not going if I'm not happy. In this instance yes I would go, white lines or not but I won't let them dictate my ride.

  6. I also reckon that white lines are placed with cars in mind. Much of the time (not all) the size and power/brakes on a modern sportbike (and a higher eyeline) mean that the white lines aren't always that appropriate for a bike.

  7. Yeah. I always feel bad for ignoring their invite, but there's no way i'm trusting my life to some random car driver.

  8. Agree with this too.

  9. I personally wouldn't there.

I'm not sure a bike could out brake a car, and even less riders that could out brake a car driver.

    That's an interesting one Stu675.!

I feel that the anchors on my 675 would stop me far quicker than my ABS car, but mybe it's just perception.???

  12. Very simple answer there an Audi driver would never be that thoughtful hence why you pull alongside kicking the shit out of his nazi slag wagon until he does move over or gives you grief back if he does that then break out the chain and get road rash style on his POS

    I dunno
Probably no single correct answer, other than safest would be not to overtake - safer still to stay at home & not ride a motorbike :p

I was just interested in all your opinions.

Surprised no one excepted cursed has said they would cross to the other side of the road to overtake to maximise safety over legality

IMO that's because we tend not to be risk adverse (as Daytona riders) but are inherently very "points adverse"

Hasn't anyone got any opinions or info on Stu675's excellent point on relative braking ability of a car vs a sportsbike .???

:? Less mass, but less rubber contact also.... hmmmm :?

  15. Ducati 1098 vs Lambo Gallardo - Lambo wins on the brakes by a few meters. So IF that's a gen video, then working on the assumption that the supercar has much better brakes than your average family saloon, I'd fancy the bike's chances. Dunno how the Daytona's brakes compare though.

Brake test at about 5 minutes in.

I'm in the not overtake camp - not worth the risk to the license if an unmarked copper is sat behind you, or if another bike is coming the other way at 80mph on the white line.

The regards the outbraking, interesting article here and I was suprised how quickly the bike can stop.

Thanks guys. Kinda reinforces what I felt to be the case.

    However....

In the pouring rain etc.. IR my bike stopping distances are increased far more than my Car ones.

  18. In the pouring rain I'd be on the train!

have been reading the comments and have to agree with the no overtakers for many reasons but as i am an old git 64 and have seen to many riders not make 30, safety is my main reason. did no one read this recent post. https://www.675.cc/675/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=10914

theres no easy answer to questions like stus i am sure i have done overtakes like that and been lucky enough to get away with it and maybe even do it again in the future riding a bike you sometimes make split second decisions and only afterwards realise it was not the right one as i now know to my cost sitting here looking at two 60 pound fines and a total of six points but no doubt given a few weeks my speed will be back to normal.

the brakes on the daytona are ok but not sure, depends on what the car is
