Hi gang. My brother bought another NC30 after I bought mine back off him. He's had a few problems with it. His newest issue is that he has been getting less engine braking recently. He hasn't reported a loss of power and it doesn't smoke. I took his wheels off this evening to be resprayed. I noticed that with the bike in 1st, 2nd and 3rd that the rear wheel would continue to rotate. I normally put it in gear and apply the rear brake to remove the rear wheel but a combination of this problem and a naff rear brake made it a real pain. Any thoughts on what it could be?
Have you done a compression test to see if it's low on compression? Sounds like a leak somewhere (blown gasket perhaps?)
The rear wheel continued to turn even after you had removed it?...that's odd!! If it's on startup then it's normal until the oil gets up to temp.
Haha. I don't think I worded that well. Basically the rear wheel continues to turn when in gear and there is little engine braking - hasn't alway been like this.
I can think of only 3 things that could cause lack of engine braking. 1, Poor compression. (Do a comp test) 2, Slipping clutch. (Does the clutch slip when you give it the beans?) 3, The intake system has an air leak and is sucking in air through either the carb to head joints, an emissions air bleed if fitted, one or more of the vacuum ports for carb balance is not plugged or one of the carbs is sticking open slightly. (Get a set of vacuum gauges and check the carb balance between cylinders) Hth DG. P.s. the clutch is dragging, ie not freeing properly, and that either adjustment or bent plates.
I had a the same problem on my NC30. It turned out to be the first signs of the clutch on the way out (it gave up totally after a couple of rides). The NC30 has a very tall first gear which hammers the clutch. I replaced the friction plates only with EBC ones which only cost £30. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
