What do you need to Track a bike?

Discussion in 'Chassis' started by Gankmasterflex, Jan 29, 2013.

  1. Gaffer tape holds the screen perfect never had any issues. R&G blanking plates are £30.

Aiming for over 10 track days and 5 races

Cool I'll check those out Dave but might be cheaper for the cable tie option for now. Hoping to get an overseas track day in inthe summer...

True they are cheaper I fancy doing a few of those at Brands this year just need to get the noise levels dialled down a bit. Might have to purchase one of those noise test machines from fleabay.

I want to do a few more this year, once the CBR is ready to run, I can start to improve my skills.
Key for me is to be smooth and less stop start, and be a bit more consistent.:)

Bad subject mate.... I was supposed to go to the bike show today, took the day off, then find out my fairings are supposed to arrive today... 3.15 and still not here!! Got a lot of gardening done so is is not all bad, been quite productive lol
As for running she was good before I started to strip her down. So all should be good. I will be getting some new tyres for her, and that's will be it to begin with anyway.

Ah bugger sorry to hear that dude right pain in the back side hate it when things like that don't turn up. What boots you thinking of fitting her with? Also was a little concerned if I fit a 190 on the back of my daytona won't that make her more unstable during cornering but more stable at high speed? Just want to make sure I don't do something stupid that causes me to throw my bike down the road.

To be honest mate I will be talking to my tyre man, he is a god when it comes to tyres, I don't know what would be best for her so I will take his advice.

He suggested the conti for my tigers front, I was not sure, but it is amazing it feels like a different bike...I will let you know once I have his opinion.

Ok dude thanks buddy much appreciated good to know what the experts think. Funny you hear different things about the Conti tyres I had some on my first daytona and they were lush but others on other forums I have noticed have said that they take ages to warm up and everything so they weren't too sure on them which surprises me. I have to say I have had two sets of Bridgestones recently and really love them as tyres but I think it depends on the bike I know they definitely work well on the daytona.

You won't throw it down the road Nick, a 190 on a 675 will have more side contact and it will turn slightly differently, it'll probably gear the bike up very slightly on the straights too. The 190/55 and the 180/60 are very similar in performance and iirc Wilson preferred the bigger tyre on his race bike.
You pays your money and takes your choice.

Thanks Dave much appreciated will be interested to see how it handles with one on there do you remove the rear hugger when you're running the bigger tyres at the back? Sorry for all the stupid questions just want to have everything set and not cause a hold up on track by not prepping my bike properly.

If you're doing trackdays the best thing you can do re tyres in my opinion is look at what everyone else is using in the fast group, 90% will be racetecs and supercorsas in stock size so go for that, as they're then easy to replace with cheap scrubs. I've bought a set of dunlop d211 gp racers from kiwi uk so looking forward to trying them out.

Seen many people try out (not personally) the bigger tyres on a 600 and 180s on a 1000 but if they were faster/better then they'd be using them in racing.

Fairpoint I guess dude. Funny thing about tyres they can different in performance from rider to rider I'll be looking forward to watching the experienced riders on track though. I was watching some sessions from Snett the other night quick question in the novice group do they make you do slow warm up laps at the start of every session?

Only reason I ask was at RH because the bikes were constantly being rotated after we had warmed up the tyres at the start of the first session we were just able to get on it in each consequtive session following that but I am assuming that was because the bikes were being rotated so the tyres weren't being given the chance to cool down.

You have to compulsory sighting laps on every trackday regardless of group, but there always a "warm up lap" or two, its just down to the instructor in front to dictate the speed according to the riders ability in his group and the kit they're on. I've seen Varadero's and Tigers on track before in the novices...

I find it funny when you're in pit lane and they're pointing furiously at the big fuck off sign saying "WARM YOUR TYRES". You get 2 corners into the session and someone on slicks comes tearing past and pisses off into the distance...

I know tyre warmers work but they're not fully up to temp until about a lap or two in so I'm always cautious in that early period.

It's part of the fun to think about and do all the prep, but really, for your first track day, I wouldn't worry too much about anything other than tyre life and pressures.

I only take my mirrors and indicators off because I don't want to pay for replacements should I have a crash. Before I started using homemade mirror blanking plates on a whim, I never noticed any flapping probs with the front fairing either.

I've never been asked to disconnect the lights or to tape them up.

I only take my number plate off for cosmetic reasons and so I don't have to worry about blanking it out in photos.

Don't really need paddock stands if you're not using tyre warmers, unless you plan to be working a lot on your bike...

Chair is a luxury on a one day track day- there are always places to sit unless you're worried about getting your leathers dirty! Lol

Crash bungs are a personal choice - yes, they could potentially catch and flip the bike, but equally they could also save cosmetic damage on a lowside. I would still use engine casing protectors tho.

Ultimately enjoy the prep work if it's part of what you like, but don't stress too much about it :)

Oh, and re suspension, I wouldn't worry too much about that for your first day either. But if you want to get it set up, sometimes there are people there to help set up, but can't count on it. If you're using the Daytona, why not ask T3 to help? My set up by them for track is perfect for me and, for what it's worth, I keep the same settings on the road.

Lol yeah, don't think so either. Especially since it is quite fun to prep and plan. But thought it worth saying - lots of good advice flying around but frankly potentially causes more worry about a first track day than reassurance! :p
