I've got the multimeter connected to the ends of the 2 wires in this plug. Multimeter set to resistance and it's like there's an air gap i.e. Not a complete circuit? (edit that was with multimeter set to 200, changed to 2000k and got reading below - 6/700k ish)
    It's @treesr 2012 STR

    Symtoms:-
Morning after 2 day trackday in France, couple of hundred yards from our hotel I pull over to let my satnav calculate a route, treesr switched off and wouldn't start again. I manage to start it by bumping it down a hill it was really struggling to start but brute force down the hill encouraged it to cough into life. Was fine the rest of the day including restarts. 4 days later won't start i.e. ignition on =fuel pump primes, start button = starter motor turning for ages (strong battery) but never catches.

Just as a matter of record, the 200 setting is too low, needs to be the 2000 setting as it should read somewhere between 200-250.

All replaced fixed and working again.

I will be replacing the stator soon, is that the starter gear you mention?
Does it (or should it) come out with the alternator cover? Or is it mot supposed to?
In case it pops out, is there any timing involved or do you just slot it back in?

It does come out with the cover sometimes, just place it back in position in the engine, no timing needed as the starter motor is free spinning

Also, remember that when fitting the cover back on, the magnets will pull and it'll slam against the engine :D

Thank you so much for this post, it's hugely helpful! One question though, I know it's supposed to read ~200 ohms, but at what point is it considered bad? Mine was reading around 450-500 Ohms resistance.

Does your bike still start/run. If not I would replace it. If it does I would get a replacement on order for when it fails.

So is 400-500 bad then? Mine is currently reading 410. Bike won't start on the button, but will when bumped a few times.
    Stator is reading:
    1. 000
    2. 196
    3. 001

Are both CPS and stator dead?
    Any help is appreciated!!
