New Seals or not for valve clearance checks?

I’ve read on here no need on various threads, I’ve seen the muddy sump vids saying change them.

I understand the arguments both ways. I don’t won’t unnecessary cost nor rework!

I understand too that the choice and risk is mine alone…

What are members experiences please? Anyone had leaks as a result of not changing seals/gaskets?

  2. If we're talking cam cover seal then I've done clearances twice on mine without replacing (plus twice on the thruxton) and it's been fine. After cleaning in warm soapy water if you put it next to a new one you wouldnt know the difference.
Think it's more important that everything's clean and the seal is in position properly before tightening the cover.
Changed the "dowty" seals under the screws first time but didn't bother second time, just used a smidge of sealant under the screws.
I always replace the o rings though on top and below the cam ladder (If it's removed).

I think muddysump was using the 12k miles service kit which includes a seal anyway.

That's great, thanks. I will as a matter of course change the spark plugs, air filter is very recent anyway.

Which sort of sealant so you mean for the dowty seals please?

  4. It was just some red high temp silicone rtv I had from work years ago, you wouldn't be able to buy this exact stuff, any gasket sealant would probably do, I could still feel a lip on the seals so probably unnecessary anyway.

Also how I do a job may not suit everybody, you could argue that its a lot of work to remove the cam cover again if there is a leak for the sake of about £45 in seals, but even though I will spend where its needed to keep my bikes in tip top condition, such as the new camshaft, I can't afford to waste money where I can save it.

Many thanks indeed. Just found a good value kit online so decided to take the plunge and go all new.

Not offhand but it’s on a well known auction site.
