Homemade satnav holder

Discussion in 'Accessories' started by stubest8, Jun 14, 2013.

  1. In its simplest form you need for power is a cigarette lighter socket connected to the battery.

I was tempted to get tomtom for my Android tablet and use that in a dry bag on top of the tankbag. But then decided its probably a lot more faff than the tomtom.

Would have been so much better if the bean counters at TomTom had not removed the SD card slot. You then could have put a bigger card in with the whole of Europe on it. Also could then have used it to play music too, like the Garmin.

  2. how easy is it to fit a car sat nav to the daytona, do the ram mount kits work or do you have to make a custom bracket

You can play music on the Garmin...wow!!

Why do companies that make millions do these stupid things...I obviously am finding out that TomTom cant seem to keep all of Europe on the device but why say that it has Europe on it when it's clear that, it doesn't!! I'm prob never going to go over to Europe and if I do then certainly not as far as Italy, but if I was going g to and I bought something that said it has it loaded on then, dam it I expect it to be there haha!!

So does this mean it doesn't hold different countries at the same time...eg it holds UK as standard then on other country at a time?

You can't have been looking hard. There are just as many issues with the Garmin to be honest.
I've never had any (have a Garmin Zumo 660), but I've heard of people who have and where Garmin have said they can't fix it and as it's a software issue (such as losing maps) it's not covered under warranty.

Thats pretty disgusting g tbh...I have read all of a handful of reports from each (Garmin and TomTom) and I just can't believe it...if your paying sometimes into hundreds of pounds worth of item then you expect a certain amount of care.

I have concluded that either one...I wont go far wrong...they both have issues and positives alike. So I shall see where this takes me when ordering one lol!!

Just want a ride out further without the hassle of maps etc! Lol!! Maybe it's just laziness tbh!!

You have three choices of powering your sat nav, the TomTom One XL uses a mini USB cable

Option one is fit a cigarette lighter socket under the seat direct to the battery and plug your car charging lead in there - the only downside of this is the vibration can sometimes make it come undone.

Option two - a Mini USB lead that wires direct to the battery less than £20 delivered
    http://motorcyclemounts.co.uk/Product/3 ... -3110.aspx

Option three - and the most versatile is this lead which connects direct to the battery at one end and has a waterproof connector in the power lead. This cost £25 delivered.

The kit has the mini USB end for you and means if you change sat nav or want to power your iphone you can buy a different end lead for about £12.

EDIT : This is the lead for mini usb connection

To mount the unit you could go a simple bicycle bar mount but I would recommend a waterproof case

This one is supposed to fit the Dayton by replacing the centre nut

    http://motorcyclemounts.co.uk/Product/1 ... 16700.aspx

THis is another one they do that uses the same mounting system as the telferizer, Ram 1" ball in the centre of the yoke.

To be honest wacking a car GPS on and adding a power lead is pretty easy its just the confusing options.

If you want to hear directions as well then you are talking Blue tooth and a lot more money anyway

You could go this route for a simple mount and stick a plastic bag over it.

I'm clearly very bad at research!! Tbh I didnt no what I was looking for in the cable side of things...those sites are exactly what I am looking for :) I think I will be getting my set up sorted next month buying a bit at a time :)

I like the idea of connecting it to the battery then connecting to the sat nav with the RAM fixtures :)

I didnt really want to spend 350 on a new sat nav but after trying to look (seriously having no idea of what I needed tbh!!) I thought it's just easier to buy a full set up but then talking it over here with everyone it's helped! My sat nav I still brilliant tbh now problems with it just needs those bits and it will be turned I to a bike nav too haha!!

    Stubest

Your 100% right it is and tbh this is the best forum on the net...thankyou for the help I really appreciate it :)

The good thing about having a detachable mount and cable set-up is that you can remove pretty much everything from the bike when you don't need it or when it's parked up (to deter the 'maybe he's put the sat nav under the seat' types from trying something).

    Hi Rossgo
Below is the link for the bit of kit I got. (You would obviously choose the type that has the connector type you will mostly need, micro/mini USB)

    http://www.buybits.com/Product/9808/Mic ... -9808.aspx
And this is a video from the same people on how to fit it.. its dead easy as long as you follow the standard battery safety rules..

    Hope this helps?
