It seems to me that when the starter button is hit, the system shuts down ?

If that is the case, and the battery is healthy, then fwiw my best guess would be some sort of continuity issue with the mains supply from the battery. Perhaps the main supply cable connectors are not well connected, or (more probably) there is a problem with the main earth connection.

    And the plot thickens

So I decided to remove the wiring for the heated grips, led indicators and the battery charger wire

Once I removed them all I checked to make sure the terminals are tight and correct polarity.

Went to turn the bike on and the usual click getting but now the bike won’t even turn on no dash no lights no nothing

Again I’ve checked all the fuses and they are all fine

So I connected the battery charger back in and I noticed that it was saying it was completely dead.

I’ve checked the main earth wire and that looks perfectly fine I have not checked for the rest as am not sure where they are.

Am just stuck now sat on a cold garage floor scratching my head.

I haven’t got a battery tester at home or a multi meter.

Is it possible that even though the battery is kept on trickle charge when the bike is not in use that it could still be fucked?

  4. From your other post your bike was starting ok before the winter, battery went flat but it started ok with a booster pack, left it on trickle charge but few months later wouldn't start again, you didn't say if you tried the booster again that time.

you assumed it was a bad starter and replaced the starter, are the symptoms exactly the same now after changing the starter?

As @StMarks said it seems to be shutting down and resetting when you try to crank, is the dash shutting down, cant see in the video?
Try it with your booster pack if you haven't already, the only reason it would shut down is the voltage dropping below minimum threshold, and 99 times out of 100 that's the battery, even if it reads ok with no load.

Just read your last post as I was typing, get a new battery.

  5. Mine failed out of the blue last year, was 5 or 6 yrs old to be fair, but bike started fine when I set off, then next time I stopped 1/2 hr later it would just click and dash was shutting down, just completely died.

Sorry it’s been a very long weekend and day today am running on about 5hours sleep

    So last year about October/November

I went for a ride, got home forgot to plug the charger in

About 3/4 weeks later I decided to wash the bike and put it away for winter, finished washing the bike went to turn it on so it can dry the water I carnt reach etc and it wouldn’t turn on( I carnt remember if the bike turned on but just clicked or it was just completely dead)

I tried to bump start it by rolling it down the hill (I’ve done it in the past when I have forgot to plug in the charger)

It wouldn’t work as the road was a bit wet and the bike wasn’t getting and grip.

I couldn’t push it up the hill so I can one off the aa guys I deal with at work

He came along put his booster on and it worked straight away. I rode up the hill and left the bike running 10-15mins to dry off and to charge the battery up and then put it on charge

Fast forward till Friday just gone I thought shit I need to sort my mot out (luckily I had the day off to accept deliveries all day as the mrs wants the bathroom redoing) went to start it and just got clicks and nothing else no cranking the engine at all.

As the bike was on charge for months I didn’t even think the battery might be bad or anything so I didn’t even try a booster

Run the situation through your head and say kool battery is fully charged, it turns on, the fuel pump is priming, the solenoid is clicking but the engine ain’t turning

So must be starter, so I stripped it out and bench tested it but it would not spin it just kept on sparking.

So am thinking winner winner chicken dinner starters fucked get one change it over happy days

Colin kindly sorted one out for me for a very good price and he got it to me very quickly I bench tested that at work and worked perfectly.

Got home put it on, put everything else on and went to start it and click.

My symptoms are the same as before the starter was replaced just the clicks and nothing else.

As @StMarks said to check the connection etc I thought off removing all the extras connected to the battery and trying it just in case and when I tried it this time it just went click and turned everything off no lights no dash no nothing.

But I pulled the tank out and checked the main earth cable and it seems all good I haven’t checked the others as I am not sure where they come out.

What I did do was I pulled the battery out and and put it on charge and it said the battery was dead

While I’ve been writing it message the battery has some how managed to charge up fully (30mins roughly I’ve had to type this twice as I managed to delete it the first time)

And staring at the battery it looks like it is bulging in a few places not sure if the pictures show it properly or not.

I am going to test the battery at work just to see what it shows but regardless I will be buying a new one and am hoping that it will resolve this issue

It looks to me as though that battery has got sulphated plates (causing them to expand, hence the bulging). This often happens to a lead acid battery that has been left flat for an extended period.
A battery optimiser may well show it as being charged (and may well even accomplish that level quite quickly), but it will have no substantive "oomph".
This fits precisely with your symptoms imho.

  8. That is definitely toast, plates probably warped or more likely sulphated as @StMarks said, hopefully a new battery will solve the issues.

Probably worth investing in a simple multimeter and at least checking the charging voltage after you fit the battery, should be 13.5v to 15v @ 2000rpm, but I would normally expect no more than 14.5v. That's from my gen 3 service manual but i imagine its the same for earlier bikes.

just a personal thing, but I don't like to leave my bike permanently on a charger over the winter, I know they're "smart" and should do everything automatically to maintain the battery but if you don't have an alarm or even better remove the battery and keep it indoors they need very little charging, Triumphs recommends charging only if voltage drops below 12.8v.

    Good luck

    I’ve bought a new battery
And borrowing a booster from work today to see what happens

I did drop test the old battery and it was 8.2 volts so Am hoping that with the new battery fully charged it starts up without any issues

I just feel stupid as hell that I didn’t check it properly, but I guess this serves me right for thinking I know it all

I really appreciate both off you helping me so thank you
