Something that has been a consistent issue for me with my 2012 daytona track bike is false neutrals on upshifts (quickshifter). It's definitely me, as if I really focus on exaggerating the movement it all goes fine. Ive adjusted rearsets and improved it but i average at least 2 missed shifts per track day (and eventually thats going to cause a big problem). The bike is standard shift and that's all I know on street and track.

What are the thoughts on GP shift to get a more positive upshift? I'd now be concerned about getting positive downshifts, but after retraining my brain I feel like it's a less awkward foot position during braking. Still I'm worried about situations when quickly click down a gear as I'm turning in.

I can change my street bike to GP shift, and that's got an up-down QS so it seems like a good way to relearn after a few weeks of street riding.

Anyone do the change and struggle on downshifts?

  2. I switched both my street and race bikes at the same time to GP shift. The only time I find that I screw up shifting, is on the street, at unexpected red lights where I just keep tapping down out of habit instead of now tapping up to get it into either 1st or N.

Do you ever find it more awkward to hook your foot for downshifts? Like when you are already hanging off?

I changed to GP shift after struggling to short shift up coming out of some corners on track. It did mean that I messed up a few corner entry down shifts on the first day I was adjusting to the new situation but after the first day my brain reset and it became the new normal and I didn’t need to spend any valuable head space thinking about it.
I would say give it a go and if you up shift(pushing down)do it like you mean it

    Definitely worth trying.
I changed my track bike to race and run my any other bikes on road shift.
You'll be surprised at how quickly your brain adjusts to it.

Thanks everyone. I'll give it go on my street bike and see how I get on for a couple of weeks.

  7. In case the GP shift doesn't sort it... Sounds like you have an aftermarket QS so maybe double check it's settings, how often are you changing down to 1st, maybe try running slightly shorter gearing so you don't have to go into 1st as often? I usually change from 1st to 2nd with the clutch as riding out the pits then use the QS afterwards and never go below 2nd, I'm using stock rear sets and the Triumph QS on a gen 3, only ever had a dodgy gear change when leaning off and not getting a firm push up, which I hear is the reason a lot of people run GP shift so its easier to change gear whilst being lent off. Good luck either way, let us know how ya go :D

Thanks Dan. Don't use 1st gear on track, not on purpose at least. I've got poor ankle mobility so it's tough to lift it up my toe enough when tucked. I'm hoping I can pivot the shift peg down a lot and be able to still get my foot under, which I can't do easily in a tuck.

Unfortunately, it'll take me a while to adapt and I probably won't have another Track day until next year to know if it helps. Gotta try something or I'll eventually lunch the motor.

So end up swapping my 675 and Tuono 660 street bike to GP shift, and it's been fully adopted in my brain. Only time I screw it up is on the street at a light when not paying attention.

GP shift hasn't eliminated the missed upshifts but has helped a lot. Plus upshifts are way easier when cranked over in left handers like Donny Starkey and 1 or 2 at Bedford. So recommended if you love to nanny upshift :)
