Hi, all, I tried set up my daytona yesterday, and seems like the standard fork spring rate 9.5N is too hard for my weight.... I weight 62-63kg with all gears on.... I screw the pre-load on the forks all the way out already and still only managed to get 27mm rider sag.... the rear spring is fine, got 32mm rider sag... So I just spoke to MCT on the phone about spring, they recommend to put their own branded 8.5N spring in one fork, and 9N in another fork, to make it 8.75N in average, and 5W oil....oh and cut about 15mm pre-load spacer off.... Just wonder what people's opinions are on this? I never heard of putting different rate of spring into each fork.... Here is my set-up note
MCT certainly know what they're doing suspension wise. The different spring rates seem close enough to not cause any twisting issues, the fork oil should improve the damping, and the cut down preload spacer should give a better range of preload adjustment.
I'm in the exact same boat, my sag on the front and rear are around the same. I don't know about different springs in each but I know that the K-Tech 20DDS cartridges use separate compression and rebound circuits in each leg and they work fine (well, best kit they do) and like Wyrm said, MCT are one of the most highly recommended suspension places in the South, can't go wrong with Darren's advice.
+1 for Darren. Kelvin ran a 9.5 on one leg and a 9.0 on the other in his race bike last year. I run 9.5's in mine but I'm a heavy bugger
Sounds do-able, MCT are one of the best so they know what they are doing. 63kg is properly light so no wonder u can't dial the standard settings in to suit. What rear set-up are u using? The rear spring is harsh when you 80kg let alone that, bet its a wild ride. I have an Ohlins with a 10.5 spring on and it's MUCH better, but I'm 85kg so u would probably need even softer
Really?? The stock rear spring is seriously strong. I'm not much heavier than you and it's ridiculously hard. I'm looking at getting mine changed in the next week.
Agreed, rear spring is a compromise for a pillion, you might get the sag, but you'll never get linear rate unless you weigh in as 1.5 - 2 people. :?
I agree, my sag was okay but the bike was horrific over fast bumps even with the settings wound off, that standard rear shock is not even a good doorstop.
yoyo try HM Racing. They're in Surrey and the suspension chap looks after the TTC racers forks, hence the stickers.
I went on a twisty rideout with my friends today. The rear felt reli planted, it is just the front that I felt lack of weight on it......so when I came back home, got help from a couple mates, I raised the fork height for 3mm, dropped the front end, went for a quick spin, it felt bit better immediately but I will test it properly on next Sunny day.....
All you've done is alter the geometry. Lowering the front will just help it turn a bit quicker but doesn't actually give you more travel. Is the damping ok? Your front rebound is 13, I think standard is 6 and I like 4 but that might be the age if the oil having an effect on that.
How much travel do use when riding ? Stick a cable tie round both ends go ride then see what's left. It depends on how you ride and how much travel you are using up more than anything. Oh and the long top out springs in your bike means that the total travel changes with every change of preload. Here's a pic from my 2010 Daytona. You can see the total travel change per line so don't assume it's 120 throughout the range. As you wind it out the top out spring will relax giving you more total travel. I can't stress enough that chasing sag figures is only useful if you are using your travel up. A friend same bike & same weight as me has figures of 35 front and 33 rear. I have 43 35. We both use up the same amount of travel to within 2mm. He brakes really hard all the time, I don't i prefer to carry speed rarely braking hard.
ye, I felt that....it doesn't cure the problem....guess I will have to get springs.... Damping felt ok so far.... so does anyone know whats the standard spring rate for front and rear? I searched google, Race Tech said 9N, K-Tech said 9.5N....confused.....
9 is standard mate, they are progressive. I had 9 linears fitted in mine when I had the K-Tech 20ssk fitted. Be warned the standard oil is gross. It's like treacle!
Yes, the standard oil is vile - get 5W instead. The rear spring is very stiff from stock. The rear will feel planted sure, but I would expect the ride to feel hard and you'll feel every bump. That's how mine was and I'm just a little heavier then you. Once I had the rear spring changed the rear felt so much more planted and I wasn't being thrown out of the seat on every bump.
Ah....if the standard fork springs is 9N...then K-tech's 9N spring will be pointless? Because K-tech is saying they would suggest 9N... Whats the standard spring rate for shock spring on daytona? 110N? Thinking if im gonna do front, might as well get the rear done as well... Thanks for opinions, guys
