Learned something new today so I thought I'd share. Having had a weeping issue on the brake lines out of the master and having to torque it up quite a bit I began to wonder if copper washers are the best thing to use. Was just about to switch in a new rear brake line pressure switch from lightech and noticed on the banjo were two different washers, not copper, pulled them off and spotted a rubber seal on the inside edge. Little google and it turns out these things are called bonded seal washers. Not as cheap as copper ones but according to searching on google offer a better seal vs their copper cousins. Copper Washers Bonded Seal Washers Just wondering, has anyone else used these bonded seal ones and had any information on them? I've ordered a pack off ebay of various sizes because I'm a bit of a hoarder when it comes to things like this.
Interesting. I've seen bonded seal washers in use (can't think where though!). I haven't seen them used in a braking system, but if Lightech are using them I guess they are up to the job. Naturally you'd want to be 100% certain that the rubber in the version you use is compatible with brake fluid!!
Of course, appears they're also called dowty washers and are used in various places with high pressure, never seen them before. Though I've done a search and some on google say they're not safe for use with brake fluid systems, but why would lightech be using them on their brake lines. Who knows, seems a weird one Edit - Removed the ebay link as I don't think those ones are suitable for brake lines in that they contain nitrile rubber, more information in my next comment
Found them listed on the hel website. Edit - Turns out I needed to do a bit more research on these. So the ones that are best suited for brake lines do not contain Nitrile rubber which seems to be where using them can cause an issue. So that's what to look for when ordering them. Just to be on the safe side I've ordered a couple packs from Hel, yes I paid out the money for piece of mind that they've got the correct rubber on them
i have a couple of boxes and was going to say i wasnt sure if any good for brake fluid but you figured out youself mainly used in hydraulic lines if your copper ones not sealing maybe there not right size or just inspect them you will be surprised how many have a machining mark or a bit of swarf still on them seen it many times even o e dealer supplied
Copper softens when you heat it. If reusing a copper crush washer, heat it with a propane torch before using it.
