Morning All, Need some help and advice; I have a 2008 675, which was one of the bikes recalled by Triumph a few years back to have the Reg/Rec re-installed for free... Anyway last year I also had the Alternator/Stator burn out on me so I had a reconditioned one put in. We come to now, well she has been left in the cold a few times and needed trickle charging etc a few times..... last week however I went to go to work but she wouldn't fire up so I put her on a trickle charge for 45 mins enough to get her to spark over. On the way to work she died on me.... RAC attended and said that the battery was not getting recharge in IDLE mode (engine running) So they jump started me and I got home (2miles away) revving the bollocks off of her, and she died again just as I got home. So placed on charge for the next 16 hours, she started perfectly following morning, went to work all good. left later about 8hours after..... Stopped to fill her up and She wouldn't fire over Had to call the RAC out again and they showed me when throttle was opened it was still NOT recharging ENOUGH, example: battery around 11.23V engine just running, when throttle was opened still not getting to 12V even.... Need advice on what you think it could be ???????????? Jay
Check this first... https://www.675.cc/675/threads/stator-and-cps-testing-and-replacing.30931/#post-410150 Could pick one up on eBay from £50 if it is indeed the R&R
Well that was a brain fuck moment....... what them guys were on about I have no idea...... Im sure it was an episode of Star Trek I must have missed.....lol No, thanks it has actually been helpfull.... will take it to my local Mech and ask him to check her over.... Thanks Legacey
Couldn't the battery be knackered mate.? If it's at the end of it's life, it will constantly demand from the charging circuit (causing a lower measured voltage even when running) & then not retain that charge. If it's old, or has been allowed to remain flat for a period, it may be easier to get a replacement first.?
I would agree with stm sounds like battery to me, the mv had exactly the same symptoms and it was battery.
Battery is only about 18 months old but has been a bit abused as in left to go flat a couple of times now... So this could be a process of elimination starting with a new battery...? Probably a good shout
start the bike and disconnect the stator, check the output across any 2 of the 3 terminals and test each "pair", you should be seeing AC voltage out from each pairing. i think it is about 20v at idle up to 45v at 5k rpm if you get nothing or inconsistent across each, then stator has a fault. if there is balanced output, plug it back in and check voltage out of RR into battery, if this is below 13v then RR has a fault. if stator output good and RR output good, then battery is not holding charge and probably knackered. (other than some other wiring fault/to ground)
I've just been through this process on my 2010 Street Triple and ended up replacing the stator. Based on comments from other members about the general flakiness of the Triumph charging system I've fitted a small LED volt meter (£5) to the battery under the seat (permanent live). This only consumes 0.01 V and enables me to see at a glance, the state of the battery when the bike is not running (13.2V) and the charge going into the battery when the bike is running (14.4). Hopefully, this will enable me to head off any future stator/reg-ec, battery issues.
