So, I've come to the realisation I want to do other things with my money and so I've sold my Ducati 899. I'm not getting value out of having it and I want to buy a new car so I can only do one thing at a time. I'm off to say good bye to it in a while as the dealer already has it. I guess the good thing is that I still have access to my dads Thruxton which I ride quite a bit, and also I have a longer term plan to buy another 3-4.5k bike in a year and outright so that it's easier to justify. This will also be almost certainly another Daytona 675. I'm also lucky in that I am going to be buying a new MX-5 2.0. I know people always give the hairdresser comments, but it weighs 1 tonne and handles superbly and you can have fun at low speeds so I am happy to be replacing the bike with a 'toy'. I'll continue to contribute as it's a great forum!
That is sad but, I understand where your coming from. Had that battle myself. Mum had an mx 5 great car. Did you sell your 899 to the dealer?
Sorry to hear it - but you're only ever in between bikes Phil! at least you have access to dad's Bonnie to scratch that itch and although I do agree the MX-5 is a great car, they just can't squeeze past traffic the same way a bike can (and those forward facing number plates are a nuisance...). Guess Smallboy will be doing well out of you for trackdays this summer then - or just get that £3k 675 before the prices start creeping up!
Thanks guys, appreciate the thoughts, I'll be keeping an eye out for bikes in the classifieds once the wedding and honeymoon is paid for but for the moment I'll be out on the thruxton.
Sad times indeed mate, but as FF said it's clear see all the positives. I'm sure I could always bring a spare bike with me to the Forum Trackday, as I don't think your dad would appreciate lending you the Thruxton to have it bouncing off the limiter for a whole day.
We were trying to work out what I would be quicker round Cadwell on, my dad's Thruxton or my RS125 (that I might be buying back to keep my insurance ticking over).... I think the Rs...
We will be here for you, I loved my MX5, been looking at the new ones 1.5 or 2.0 I have no need for one, hence pondering. Which one are you looking at? All the best matey
Thanks mate, 2.0 sport nav because I really like the stiffer bilstein dampers and limited slip diff, also the top spec comes with heated leather seats and bose sound system and even adaptive LED lights. The other thing is that I think the extra torque will be nicer around town, the 1.5 is supposed to still be excellent fun! The 2.0 sport is really quite focussed though, my fiancé was grumbling for the first half the test drive as it's hard across rough surfaces but out on the smoother roads it's lush with very little body roll. Also she is getting a brand new all singing and dancing Mazda 3 hatch as a company car so she is very happy
I'd be going for the 2.0, it has Bilstein sussies, I loved my one on Meister R Coilivers, leather is a winner when you have AC, as the new ones do. Roundabouts with greasy roads will now be a riot, and when quiet, a quickly slipped clutch, and boot of gas, get the back coming round, so so so much fun Enjoy matey, only live once, no regrets, get it ordered
We have a 2.0 sport too. Different car with the traction control turned off. Much quicker and miles more fun. I'm sure you'll have fun although nothing beats a bike
Thanks all, appreciate the support! I've had some serious hassle off my family and riding buddies for selling my bike but I just want to do something different and I have an old Golf that needs replacing and just can't do it all with the wedding this year. I'm lucky to be able to do the Mazda so as definitely making sure I get what I want
Completely understand your choice mate. If I hadn't been gifted the Teapot Suzuki by my brother in law and just bought The Millenium Falcon ( 2000 Ford Ka 'Collection') off work mate for £300 I would probably be thinking along the same lines. I love my 1299, I really do but I have finally arrived at the point in my life where I can't be arsed cleaning it all the time and I get sad seeing what the salt does to it and I don't like paying for stuff to just sit there. Ask the dealer for cash then stuff it down your pants for ten minutes then then take it to your bank.
Haha well I've moved quickly and already agreed a price on a new MX-5. Have managed to get £1750 off RRP with a good trade in so really happy, hopefully I'll get it early Feb
The fastest!! Nice choice of car and colour Phil - sure it'll be loads of fun, just hang onto all your bike gear for the next bike...!
Nice. My missus has a black mark 2, 1.8. I know it's a very different car from yours, but I suppose the basics are the same. I love driving it. Amazing fun on a B Road at still-legal speeds. Even nipping around the city you can feel how nimble it is (and how much fun) My only criticism is that it doesn't sound great, but hey, that's the only one. Great fun, and only paid £2500 years and years ago, great nick and none of the dreaded rust. Anyone who says it's a hairdressers car a) hasn't driven one and b) has self esteem issues! I've had some fairly fast cars in the past, but they've got so accomplished now that you don't feel the 'buzz 'until you're doing crazy speeds. I must be getting old, but give me a slower car that's more fun any day of the week...
