Be careful with disc spacing with aftermarket discs. I needed to add washers to mine to get them to run I line because I think either the discs that were on there were the wrong ones or the disc spacer was missing. Behind each disc there should be a thin spacer. If u go to cradley Kawasaki they have a really good parts section where u can order up all the parts off the original drawings.
The spacers will work fine with standard zxr discs mate, it's just if u start changing the around with aftermarket discs u need to be careful
No worries mate, good little bikes all round really. I would say they are the best of the 400's by far. I would like an RVF400 but at the money you need for a decent one you can get an RS250 for a little more and that is where my heart really is...
Got a new starter motor and solenoid relay hopefully arriving today, by the end of today I might have a bike start to show you
Here isthe offending article.. However my replacement didn't come so now my bikes just sitting there.. However.. I'm really proud that I got it out! It was very square peg in a round hole based scenario! This is all very new to me and im well chuffed im not relying on my mechanic for things like that!
Lovely little bike mate and lots of fun will be had I'm sure. While I understand you want to give it your touches, I think you should keep it fairly original looking on the outside and a bit tatty too I've got a 20 year old Honda 400 that has superb suspension, brakes, engine etc but it looks quite dated but what fun it is to run rings around bigger, faster bikes
Really cant wait to get it all sorted. I see why people say itd be a good tatty pocket rocket, but I just cant lol i like making old things new and modern im not really one for the classical touch. I dont know what it is, but I dont think hardly any older bikes look good at all im a sucker for style.
If you have the budget and deep pockets, carry on and can't wait to see the outcome I spent well on suspension, engine, brakes etc and new radiators & hoses cost over 800 quid but as I had overheating issues due to damaged rads, I had little choice. I've had an off or two over the years but the standard bodywork is easy enough to repair / replace.
Looking at the spec its quite upgraded as it came, definitely getting the Gixer 6 calliper mod though! will transform the entire front end! im desperate to ride it! replacement starter motor should be in today!!
It doesn't have to be gsxr600 calipers tbh although that is what I used on mine, u can also use a CBR Nissin caliper which is a really good brake. Standard zxr calipers can be okay if they are in tip top condition but if u have a crappy set they aren't worth rebuilding now
These Zxr callipers look like they need a complete overhaul to be fair, im used to sronger more responsive breaking with 675, so il definitely find some form of upgrade soon, I wish I knew all compatible mods across the whole bike.. Ive looked on the ZxR 400 forum but it tends to be more body mods and chavy bits so no luck there
Tbh it's pretty simple in terms of scope! It's fairly easy to get decent power out of them, like 70hp, maybe 75hp at crank. As soon as u go further it just gets really silly really quickly.
If the old spec I was given was true it should be putting out at 70+ but il know more when I get it up on the dyno when I get a new end can for it. On the Sv's you can bolt on a Gixer 750 front end pretty much straight in. I wouldnt go stupid on money spent but im happy to throw a bit at it
All I would say is get some fresh oil in it before dyno and check that it's got good compression on all cylinders, don't want to blow it up on the dyno as these engines aren't getting any younger. My feeling is that 70 is the limit for them without defeating the point, because it's not a lighter bike than a GSXR600, probably heavier so if u wanted much more power u would get a 600, it's all about getting the nicest power curve and making the most of the handling and awesome front end!
What you just said is pretty much ideally what im looking for, good shout on the oil. Im going to.take it to my mechanic before anything gets used in anger, hes going to do a full service and balance if he needs to so hopefully.. Fingers crossed.. we will be in business soon! Just got the motor through the post so il get that in when I get back
Ok, so replacement starter motor is in.. Power on.. Buzzing coming from starter relay.. So, battery off and charging see if that cures it.. It did it on two relays I have so going with a flat battery for now.
Check the earth connections as that could be the issue or if you have a mulit meter, check the battery
